Human Synergistics Diagnostic

Group Styles Inventory
(GSI)

See how your group really works together. The GSI measures how members interact when solving problems and making decisions, revealing the styles that help or hinder your team's effectiveness.

Measure how your team thinks together

The Group Styles Inventory from Human Synergistics measures how the members of a group interact with one another when solving problems and making decisions. It captures the group's interaction styles in the moment — so a team can see, with real evidence, how its own behaviour affects the results it achieves.

The 12 Styles

Three styles of interaction

Following a group problem-solving task, members assess the way the group worked together. The results map onto the same 12 styles as the Human Synergistics Circumplex, grouped into three behavioural clusters.

Constructive styles

The interaction styles that promote effective, synergistic teamwork — where the group draws on the thinking of every member.

Passive / Defensive styles

The styles that lead members to subordinate their own thinking, holding back ideas rather than putting them forward.

Aggressive / Defensive styles

The styles that turn problem-solving into a contest, where winning the argument matters more than reaching the best decision.

How the assessment works

A simple, in-the-moment process that turns how your group behaves into insight it can act on.

01

Solve together

The group completes a problem-solving task, working through it the way it naturally would.

02

Assess the interaction

Immediately afterwards, members assess the way the group worked together while the experience is still fresh.

03

Map the styles

Results map onto the 12 styles of the Human Synergistics Circumplex, grouped into three behavioural clusters.

04

See your synergy

The team sees how its own behaviour in the moment shaped the quality of its decision and its overall effectiveness.

What you get

Benefits for your team

The GSI gives teams an honest, shared view of how they work together — and a clear starting point for working together better.

See what helps or hinders

Reveal how your group's interaction styles help or hinder the results it is able to achieve together.

Measure synergy

Find out whether the group genuinely outperforms its individual members — or falls short of what they could achieve alone.

Build awareness

Build a shared understanding of the behaviours that drive effective, synergistic teamwork.

A shared language

Give teams a common language for talking about how they work together, not just what they decided.

Target improvement

Identify where to focus, then track improvements in group effectiveness over time.

Grounded in the Circumplex

Anchored to the same 12 styles as the Human Synergistics Circumplex used across their diagnostics.

The outcome

From insight to synergy

The real test of any group is whether it achieves more together than its members could alone. The GSI makes that visible — measuring synergy, surfacing the behaviours behind it, and giving teams the awareness to lift their effectiveness.

A clearer picture of how you work

Move past assumptions about how the group functions and see its actual interaction styles.

A measurable target for change

Set a clear direction for more constructive teamwork and track progress as you go.
